JFrog Artifactory, set up properly and kept lean

Self-hosted installs, retention rules that actually delete things, and Xray reports with every release. Or a fixed-price health check if yours is already running and running out of disk.

The red lines are where most teams start. The green lines are where you end up.

artifactory/storage.md+4 −4
  • Storage keeps growing and nobody knows which builds are safe to delete.
  • Retention rules run on a schedule, with a dry run first.
  • Cleanup was tried once, and it deleted something a customer release needed.
  • Release artifacts sit on a protect list and are never touched.
  • The server was installed by someone who left, and upgrades feel risky.
  • Install, backups and upgrade steps are documented in a runbook.
  • Xray finds issues, but the reports never reach the people shipping releases.
  • Scan reports are exported and attached to every release.

What you get

Self-hosted setup

Artifactory installed on your servers or cloud, including container setups with Podman and proper networking, with repositories, permissions and backups configured.

jfrogpodmandocker-registry

Retention and storage cleanup

Rules that remove old snapshots and builds on a schedule, with a dry run first so you see exactly what will go.

retentiondry-run

“Keep the latest build” policy

The latest build of every component is always kept, however old, so a cleanup can never break a rebuild.

keep-latest

Protected release artifacts

A protect list for anything that shipped to a customer, so release files are never touched by cleanup.

protect-list

Storage reports

Size per repository and growth over time, emailed on a schedule, so you see the problem before the disk does.

reports

Xray scan reports

Vulnerability reports exported and attached to each release, where your team and customers can see them.

Artifactory questions

Will the cleanup delete something we need?
No. Every rule runs as a dry run first, the latest build of each component is always kept, and anything that shipped to a customer goes on a protect list.
Do you work with JFrog Cloud as well as self-hosted?
Yes. The health check and retention work apply to both.
We only have the free/OSS edition.
That’s fine. Some features (like Xray) need a paid licence, and I’ll tell you which on the call.
Can you upgrade an old Artifactory version?
Yes, with a backup and a tested rollback plan first.

Running out of disk again?
